To all Trade Unions in the South West TUC Region 2nd September - TopicsExpress

To all Trade Unions in the South West TUC Region 2nd September 2013 Dear Colleague RE-LAUNCH OF THE EXETER & DISTRICT TRADES UNION COUNCIL The Exeter & District Trades Union Council was founded in 1890, but sadly has been largely defunct over recent years. There has never been a greater need for Trades Councils in our local community, to campaign and to co-ordinate with Trade Unions on local issues. Much work has been undertaken by Trade Unionists in Exeter to get the local Trades Council back on its feet and still much has to be done. The Trades Council will be re-launched in Exeter on Tuesday 22nd October 2013, at The Barnfield Theatre, Barnfield Road, Exeter EX1 1SN (doors open 1730 hours) and already speakers have been agreed. Jannetja Longyear, long standing Trade Union activist in the Exeter will speak on the history of the Trades Council, Nigel Costley Regional TUC Secretary together with Bob Crow General Secretary of the RMT will also address the meeting. It will be a marvellous opportunity to put the Trade Union movement in Exeter back on the local map, but as l mentioned still much to do! We are currently having a new banner made (copy attached) by Ed Hall and it will be officially shown at our launch but as you can imagine its costs money and the Exeter Trades Council has limited funds. Can l make an appeal to your Union at Regional and hope local level to give to our banner and re-launch fund, the banner will cost £650 and the re-launch about £300, so any donation to this would be appreciated. Our timetable of events are as follows- Council Meetings Monday 7th October 2013 at 1730 hours at 26, Clifton Hill, Exeter Re-launch Tuesday 22nd October 2013 at 1800 hours, Barnfield Theatre, Barnfield Road, Exeter EX1 1SN (doors open 1730 hours) Council AGM Monday 25th November 2013 at 1730 hours at 26, Clifton Hill, Exeter At Our AGM we will be electing our Officers for the forthcoming year, so nominations for President, Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer and seven Committee members will be required. A copy of the Exeter TUC Rules are available by request in email format! Affiliations We already have ten local Trade Union Branches affiliated, which is a good start but of course we wish to be representative and need your Branches to affiliate. The minimum fee is £10 but if you wish to contribute more than any amount above this, then this is welcome. Officially its 10 pence per member, two delegates for the first 100 members and one additional delegate per 100 members after with a maximum of eight. (That would be nice) We do need money of course to function, but more importantly we need people to attend and participate in the work of the Trades Council. So please can you urge your local Branches to affiliate to the Council and send delegates to our meetings and again can l ask that you support our Banner and re-launch appeal. You can affiliate and advise of delegates and support our banner/re-launch fund by sending cheques made payable to “Exeter & District Trades Union Council” To:- Tony Wardle, Flat 33, The Maltings, Heavitree, Exeter, EX2 5EJ Or you can send them direct to myself at my office address Please circulate this to all Branches in the Exeter & District Area together with all activists, this would be appreciated. Finally details of the re-launch together with the confirmed venue will be sent later for distribution. Yours sincerely, Philip Bialyk Regional Organiser
