To all, We will practice on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday this week. . We had a great victory this week up in mountains. You all did a great job overcoming everything Mountain threw at us in the second quarter. Despite only having the ball for one play in the second quarter you found a way to shut down their momentum and generate our own momentum which propelled us to victory. Your play led me to this week’s character message. Character Message #8 This week’s message is about courage; something I think all of you displayed on Saturday. Definition: the ability to do something that you know is difficult or dangerous. Related Video: youtu.be/p2m6fEPyb4M The video of Kerri Strug gives you a brief story of the impossible situation that Kerri Strug faced when doing her final vault as the United States attempted to hold on to their lead for the 1996 Gold Medal; an example of an athlete displaying courage. Knowing that the Russians had a chance to take the gold with a complete collapse of the United States women, Kerri needed to vault and land on her feet in order to mathematically eliminate the Russians. After under-rotating the landing on her first vault Kerri severely damaged her ankle and achieved a score lower than what they needed to secure the gold. Despite the pain she was feeling Kerri courageously chose to do a second vault in an attempt to secure the gold for the United States. Against all odds, Kerri performed the vault well as she scored 9.712 out of 10 to secure the gold for the United States! This is one of the most courageous moments in all of sports. Sometimes courage comes when you get back on the field after a very difficult second quarter like you did Saturday. Sometimes courage is playing your position as designed or going after someone who is bigger than you on the football field even though it will be hard. Courage can come when you walk up to a coach and ask how you can get better. In life courage can be displayed in many different ways. Courage can be displayed when you stand up for what is right; stand up against bullying; sit with someone you don’t know when they are alone; or advocate on behalf a friend or even a stranger. Sometimes courage is the ability to trust that those around you will do the right thing. Sometimes it takes courage to say no to peer pressure and remained committed to your goals in life. Doing the right thing is a courageous act. Quote of the week: I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear. ~Nelson Mandela Buddy Question of the week: Find a courageous act that your buddy displays this week on the practice field, at school or on game day and let the team know.
