To all association members: Over the past few months, there have been several meetings and many discussions about a possible merger with the Windom Hockey Association for girls varsity hockey. We called an association wide meeting in June, which was attended by about 50 members, and the overwhelming majority (over 90 percent) expressed the desire to remain autonomous as Worthington Hockey. In the meantime, the hockey board beefed up our recruitment committee, and led by the hard work and dedication of Jared Foster and other committee members, we now have added commitments to the girls squad so that it appears we will field a team of approximately 17 to 20 skaters. As a result of these efforts and because we expressed our desire to remain independent to school board members and District 518 administration, the merger will no longer be pursued. In my opinion, the biggest positive from this situation is that this has been a huge wake up call to the association as to how important recruiting is to maintaining a strong, viable program. Several of us attended a meeting in Mankato earlier this year that recommended ways to grow numbers and many of those ideas are being put into place with our floor hockey fun nights, our booth at the fair, our plans for presentations in the schools this fall and Try Hockey for Free events once the ice is in. Thanks to all of our members who helped with these events and who sat in our booth at the fair. We greatly appreciate your efforts--BUT-- we need to do more. I would ask that you try to promote Worthington Hockey every opportunity you get. Whether you are out with friends, at school events, or whenever your child has a non hockey playing friend over, tell everyone how much fun you have being involved in this sport. Encourage every child - and every parent- to at least come out and give it a try. Emphasize how many friends you have made through this organization, how much fun it is to go as a group to out of town games and tourneys, and how gratifying it is to be a part of an organization that does so much to promote a positive, healthy endeavor for our children. Thanks for all you have done, and all you will contribute in the years to come. Kevin Black WHA President
