To all motorists that encounter horseback riders & to all - TopicsExpress

To all motorists that encounter horseback riders & to all horseback riders that encounter motorists........ Today I had a pleasant experience on my ride down my country road. An older gentleman & his wife stopped their vehicle and cut the engine when they thought my mount was acting skittish. I informed them that she was simply a bit of a fire ball but road savvy. We then proceeded to have a nice conversation & both carried on our merry ways. Road safe or not I always worry when heading out on my horse, which is often, that some jack ass is gonna fly by me and shower myself and my horse with gravel. Upsetting her and putting me into the mood to hunt them down and slash their tires. I think this unpleasant for both parties involved. A mutual acquaintance of mine & a young man with a big loud pick up truck told me that the young man only slowed his vehicle for me because I always waved & thanked him for his consideration for the safety of me & my horse. For everyother rider he continued to fly by because they never requested a slow down with a hand up gesture only a one finger salute as he went by. I am also a driver so I respect the riders I see out by slowing down & giving them ample space. This in no way bothers me or consumes much time. To riders I say that this respects deserves recognition with a wave & even a nod/smile..... Something. To motorists I say you never know what that horse is thinking or seeing. They are flight animals & could put themselves in your path in a milli second. Nothing good ever came from a horse/car accident for either party. Like or not horses have the same right to be on the road as cars, bikes & pedestrians. To stop or slow down can save an accident or any unpleasant mishap. As well riders need to applaud the considerate souls out there so they stay that way. As an after thought, you never know who you might encounter on the road. It could be a sweet old couple, a new friend or a future mate even! Pls be considerate and safety aware. Happy trails!!:)
