To all my Facebook friends please read and share this home has been in 6 generations.... Hello to my friends and family, I am writing this e-mail to ask for your help. Sorry its long. Some of you know some of this story and others know little or none. Last fall our neighbors, Hazelden/Betty Ford Foundation met with us to let us know they were expanding. They told us of their plans, we were a little disappointed, but knew it was their property. We asked at that time how far they would be from the fence in our back yard. We were told 15 feet from the fence.(which was code) They were building as close as they could to our fence. After their plans were finalized, Hazelden had an open house in April and Chuck and I went, we saw the design of the building and all the landscaping. We again asked how far they would be from the fence, again we were told 15 feet. Fast forward to June 27, 2014. Hazelden requested a meeting with us to let us know that the property line was not the fence line. We were aware of this and we believe Hazelden was also. At the meeting Hazelden told us their building would now be 15 feet from the property line, NOT the fence. Now instead of 46 feet from the house, it would now be 24 feet. It will be a 3 story building, that will be as tall as our house. They will have to remove all our mature trees and bushes, all the barriers between their building and our home will be gone. We were told they had presumed the fence was the property line. When asked why the fence was not on their designs or their survey, we were told they were left out and a mistake was made. (they had 6 or 7 surveys) Chuck and I let them know this was not acceptable and what could they do to resolve this problem. Hazelden met with us a week later, they had sent two people, to tell us their position is that the building will go 15 feet from the property line, and they would help us landscape. We needed time to think, so they left, and on their way out left their business cards. (one of them was an attorney) Chuck and I obtained a property lawyer, to help us know what our rights were. There was research and a lot of back and forth with the lawyers. Hazelden had a torrens title to their property, so we could not use the fact we had maintained and used this piece of property for over 100 years. Research showed the properly line could have been changed back in 1953. But at that time it would have been expensive, and then what good neighbors do is to agree on where the lines are with a hand shake and most likely a beer. Who will ever build this close to the property line? (was most likely their thought) The expense to continue the fight is to much for us, Hazelden has unlimited resources, we do not. Hazelden made us a small offer to settle our claim, they also offered to buy all our property. They wanted an answer by the end of the month. Both offers were an insult. We did a counter offer asking for more time, to see if we could live with the changes and for some compensation for all that they had put us through. They did not consider it or even look at our counter offer. So now what???? We thought we would let the public know what was happening. This is where I like to have your help. I need people to facebook, e-mail, twitter or?? Hazelden and let them know, what they are doing is wrong and immoral and just not neighborly.Tell them a story, or a memory you have of our family or our home. Let them know how important it is to preserve our mature trees and our history. Share this with your friends, family or whoever might listen. Tell them the same story. Let us know if you know of any other avenue we can go down. Or other ways we can get the word out. I know this is a lot to ask, but this is really important to me and my family.
