To all my dear friends/family My mom, her friend and I launched - TopicsExpress

To all my dear friends/family My mom, her friend and I launched a project called the “Damkat Projek” (translated, the Dam Cat Project). Let me give you a little bit of background: We often camp at a place called Hengelaarsvriend on the banks of the Roodeplaat Dam in the Northern parts of Pretoria. With each camp we came across many stray cats –none of them ever had any proper health care. Due to the fact that these cats are not owned by humans, they are not sterilized or neutered which results in new kittens every few months. According to statistics one female cat can have up to 8 or more kittens per litter and have 5 litters a year. That amounts to 40 kittens per year! The colony of cats at the dam has increased drastically over the years and we felt that we should intervene. The owners of the resort tried to get the situation under control, but without the necessary assistance, support and funding all their attempts failed. They also feed the cats on a daily basis to look after their nutritional needs. We approached various animal clinics in the area and the Hatfield Bird and Animal Hospital (HBAC) came to our rescue (or rather the little felines’ rescue). HBAC is giving us a huge discount on the sterilization and neutering of our feline friends. Instead of charging R1,100 (female) and R750 (male) respectively, they will charge R250 for each cat that is brought to the clinic for sterilization/neutering. They will also vaccinate each cat against rabies and worms. Usually this vaccination will cost an additional R50, but the clinic will attempt to get a sponsor for this part of the project. Unfortunately, some of the kitties are not as tame as their domestic suburban counterparts as they have never had any human contact or affection before. Therefore, we are also approaching an organization who will assist us in catching the wilder cats. We will be catching the tamer cats ourselves and we will take them to the clinic for their procedures. Once kitty has been sterilized/neutered, its ear will be clipped to avoid cats being taken to the clinic twice. If we come across any babies, we are going to put them up for adoption. In this regard, we will again call in the assistance of the clinic. I will also send you pictures of the bambinos that we find. In order to make this project a success we desperately need funding and that is where I want to call in your assistance. The clinic has created a separate account for us, where all funds for this project can be paid into. We do not want to receive the money in our personal bank accounts, as this is a charity project and we want to keep the spending of the funds legitimate and above board. We will appreciate ANY donation very much, no matter how small. For every R250 that is collected, we will take one cat to the clinic. The banking details are as follows: HATFIELD BIRD AND ANIMAL HOSPITAL ABSA BANK ACC NO: 52974803 BRANCH CODE: 631245 Proof of payment should be emailed to [email protected]. Please use “Damkat Projek” as a reference. You are also welcome to send the proof of payment to me, so that we can audit all funds paid into the clinic’s account. As animal lovers, this project is very close to our hearts. It is aimed at taking care of the health of these animals, to bring the numbers under control and to find the babies a new loving home. You are most welcome to phone me if you want further information about this. Also feel free to send this email to anyone you may know who will be willing to assist.
