To all my lovely Salseras out there …. Following can be hard. Being a good, quick and a light follower is hard!! It took me forever to allow a leader to lead me. I so clearly remember how much I struggled to improve my following skills when I took up Salsa. I also lost confidence and felt intimidated to such an extent, that I also stopped going to Salsa parties for a bit. Here are a few tips for my lovely Salseras who may be facing issues with their following skills. Firstly ladies’, keeping calm is the hardest part! A relaxed mind, and more importantly a relaxed body! This is a tip I got from my teachers…..Learn to be late! Following means you have to do the same thing as your leader... after he does it! If you do things at the same time as your leader, you are not following, you are guessing. If you have not seen the lead yet, then the lead has not been given What a relief! Now I can follow anything, with anyone. All you have to do is wait till the lead comes your way. The next most important thing - “No gripping the leaders fingers please” HOOK with your fingers…and relax your arms. Understanding (in theory) that your hands are a direct extension of your entire body (your center) is easy, but its applications takes lot of time and a conscious consistent effort. Think of your hands being connected to your center, your arms create a bridge for a lead to reach your center and be able to move you as a whole, rather than your arms independently. Wanna be a light follower? Support your own weight. Don’t lean into your leader. In terms of tension…always give what you receive - match the tension given to you by your partner and you will be light. Learn to SPIN!! Being a good spinner will also make you light and quick. Arms! Keep your arms up when youre dancing (Hip / Waist height) this makes it easier for the leader to find them and it is easier for you to follow through in time. There is a lot lore that goes into becoming good followers, read the article below. They have some good tips too. But really important ladies….. Smile :D …. Have Fun! Thats all for now – will be back!
