To all of my friends who are dog owners, and I know that there are many of you: We all know that chocolate, onions, raisins and a multitiude of other things can cause toxicity in dogs. One thing that many people are not aware of is Xylitol poisoning, Xylitol is a sugar substitute that is in many products and foods, from gum, candy, mouthwashes, toothpastes, baked goods, diabetic products etc. This chemical has the potential to be more lethal to a dog than chocolate, I found out the hard and expensive way what this can do. There should be labeling on the package that warns us that the product can be harmful to pets. When I called Cadbury the makers of Trident, and asked why this is not on thier label they said well, it is intended for humans not animals. I told her Windex is not intended for animal consumption, but there is a warning on it anyway. Unbelievable. My dog took the gum off of a contertop that was very high, however had I known it could be lethal it would have been alot firther away. I think my dog will be ok, though not out of the woods yet had very fast treatment etc. People need to know this and there has to be a push for better labeling practices.
