To all of you who have so thoughtfully given me the greatest start to a day will well-wishes and thoughts for a Happy Birthday, Id like to blow my own horn (hey! I can do whatever I want today!) and share a poem I wrote 10 years ago. I wasnt thrilled about another year running through my hands, so bear in mind, it starts out bashing birthdays... A Birthday Bash So what is so great about birthdays? Another short year of short days Has fled, stealing more of my yearnings, And leaving its marks in their place. Where once was the face I was given There now is the face time has wrought. Drawing new lines on old imperfections, It laughed at the battles I fought. Since Ill never be known by the masses, I wont hear didnt she used to be...? (Time out for a hug from a grandchild) I must settle for being just me. But wait. Whats the mirror now showing? Signs of character, not signs of wear. So what is so great about birthdays? Those who gather to tell us they care. Bring out the cake, skip the candles, Pop balloons and sing loudly off-key.
