To all of you who love Jim Hayes, Ive been in contact with the U.S. booking agent for the Irish Rovers to see if at least one, if not all, of the band members could possibly make an in person visit with Jim since he will not be able to go to the concert himself. According to the agent they actually do this sort of thing whenever possible. IF it happens, it would be the day after the concert on the 28th, so the visit would be sometime on Wednesday IF it happens. Ive decided to let you all in on the letter as long as you PROMISE NOT TO TELL JIM anything about it unless, and until, its finalized. Remember, it might not happen at all. So, with that in mind, please keep your fingers crossed! Beverly Gagliano Thomas (CPSLO class of 87) Dear Tim Drake, Thank you for speaking with me on the phone about my wonderful friend, and former Cal Poly San Luis Obispo professor Jim Hayes. Jim is a true Irishman through and through, and he absolutely adores the Irish Rovers. He would love nothing more than to go see them play while they are in San Luis Obispo. Unfortunately, he is also in his last days in hospice care, and cannot make the performance. I know its a lot to ask, but it would really brighten his last days on Earth if at least one of the band members could find the time to visit this extraordinary man who has given so much to so many. He lives a mere 15-20 minute drive from the venue in the city of Los Osos. As I told you, he is very beloved by decades worth of Journalism student that he has taught over the years; hundreds of which stay in constant contact with him to this day. Not because he was an easy A, but because he respected us enough to be a hard nosed news man, and teach us what we would encounter in the gritty real world of our chosen profession. If you misspelled a name, or got a fact wrong, or didnt properly edit your copy, it was an automatic F in big bold red pen. He used tough love to teach, and as a result we STILL love, appreciate, and respect him back. His former students now cover the news from the White House press room in D.C., to radio and television stations in New York and Los Angels. We all have one thing in common, and that is that we have the smiling Irishman Jim Hayes to thank, and call friend. We can never give back what he has given to all of us, but I know a visit from the Irish Rovers will put a twinkle once more in those smiling Irish blue eyes, and let him know how much he has touched so many lives. Sincerely, Beverly Gagliano Thomas (CPSLO class of 87)
