To anyone interested, Ive been covering the trial of Dustin Gran for The Madera Tribune the past several weeks. Gran was accused of murdering 18-year-old Krista-Rae Pike in January of 2008, and today he was found guilty of all charges including first-degree murder with special circumstances, burglary, and conspiracy in the crime. The woman accused of plotting the crime over romantic jealousy, Brittany Navarra, will begin trial in May. Navarra, who has plead not guilty, was allegedly enraged when Pikes fiance dumped her upon Pikes return to town and thus plotted her rivals death. Because Gran plead not guilty by way of insanity, sanity hearings will begin Wednesday at 10 a.m. in Stanislaus County Superior Court to determine the validity of that claim. Whatever happens, with Fridays verdict he likely faces a life bereft of freedom, whether behind the bars of prison or walls of a mental institution. For reference: Gran and Navarras trials were moved from Madera to Stanislaus County when attorneys proved bias among potential Madera-area jurors.
