To ask the Minister of Local Government and Rural Development (i) Why the daily menu for primary schools which is beans in the Francistown West Constituency, differs with that of secondary schools where there is a choice of meat, protein and starch;and (ii) When he intends to upgrade this menu to one which includes meat protein and starch. ANSWER The current daily menu for primary schools was reviewed, upgraded and aligned to that of secondary schools in 2013 by a team of food specialists with assistance of NGO and other critical stakeholders in the feeding programme. Essential nutrients like minerals, vitamins, proteins and some of starchy foods have been added to the menu to enhance its nutritive value. It is not true that primary schools menu is beans only. The menu varies on daily basis so that pupils do not eat beans every day as it is alleged. Items in the menu include stewed beef steak, sorghum.maize meal porridge ,samp, milk, bread with jam or peanut butter spreads. During the harvest season,;etlhafula items such as water melons, mealie cobs, green beans cowpeas, pumpkins, makgomane and sour milk are purchased by schools to add to the approved school menu. Thank you.
