To be a Rush fan is more than be the average enthusiast of a band. - TopicsExpress

To be a Rush fan is more than be the average enthusiast of a band. When we talk about Rush, is to talk about passion, endurance, friendship, and the best music ever. For some of us, it might be a symbol, a philosophy, or even a religious path. For me it has been my life for the last 20 years. I came across Rush during my freshman year. I was tripping with my classmates to some ruins in the south of my country (Dominican Republic). Sitting next to me was Douglas Castillo R, who at that time I considered a little different than the rest of the class, due to his knowledge on many subjects. He was a nerd, and only a nerd could understand a nerd, for that thing that you all know: Be cool or be cast out. We started to talk and he said: Have you heard Rush? In my mind there was a glimpse of a memory of me listening to tom sawye (a crapy voice, coming out of a speaker) I was young, afraid and full of crab about rock and metal). I answered: -Rush?, uhmm... -Geddy Lee, the Witch?, Douglas insisted. I scratch my head and ask a little bit concerned: -The witch? He described Geddy to me, and I thought: -Anha, now all makes sense. Back then, we all had an old Walkman set, but he had this originals by Sony, that you could plug in two headphones, so he did plug mine to his walkman and then Witch hunt went on, and I got really scared. I thought what the hell is this. But Douglas who had understood Rush music for a while told me a truth, he threw light to my obscured conscience, he said: In order for you to understand music, you need to hear it several times. It took me some time to like it, but once you get it, you wont stop listening to them. Those words sounded like magic to me, and we spent the entire trip not paying attention to the teacher, but listening to Moving Pictures. At first he got me cassettes copies of some of their albums, Rush music wasnt popular in our country, and in order to buy it you had to place an special order and wait months for it to arrive. We used to get together to do our homework listening to Rush. His house, my house, his friends houses, you named. We became well known in the university for our musical taste. People made fun of us by calling us: *Arrush con leche (for the similarity of sounds between Rush and Arroz (rice in Spanish) *[Arroz con leche is a typical desert.] We did not care at all. In fact we loved it. We were known because we were into Rush, so we started preaching rush music all over, and people started to respect us and our music, to the point that many of them recognized the quality of our favorite band. For us that was more than enough. Through the years we have changed a little. Children are growing up and friends growing older. The other day, I went to his house and fell asleep while watching the clockwork angels concert on TV. He wont forgive me that, and maybe some of you fellow friends and brothers. But I was really tired and didnt sleep the night before. From that time on, he call me Mr. Sleepy. Perhaps I am telling you this because my conscience hurts, but mainly, because if there is something that I have learned and cherish about Rush is that: The measure of life is the measure of love and respect, so hard to earn so easily burned. Recently, we have seen friends pass away. Indeed life is easily burned. For that reason i dont want to skip the opportunity to express my gratitude to Rushs example of friendship which have molded our lives for the last 2 decades. Neither would like to skip the opportunity to publicly say thanks to my dearest friend for all he had taught me. Thank you Douglas! Finally, I want to thank this group for its existence and purpose on supporting Rush far beyond. @redbarcheta1
