To be a poor man is hard, but to be a poor race in a land of dollars is the very bottom of hardships. W. E. B. Du Bois The real change has to occur at the elementary level. The faster we empower children of color with a real sense of belonging—not that of an ahistorical people—the quicker we can begin to build a proud America. Race should never be part of the equation; alas, simply by looking at the Census numbers compared to those in government and academia we know it is acting as a filter from the moment we step into pre-school.
