To be fair, I think this is over simplifying things. True, - TopicsExpress

To be fair, I think this is over simplifying things. True, Liechtenstein should have given better credit to the art that inspired his work. That would have been the respectful thing to do. But, in terms of art and swiping, in the context of what the pop art movement was about, he did transform the art into a new form and statement. Much like a musician who performs a cover song (Thank you Denise Vasquez, for this great point!). They didnt steal it, just reinterpreted it. Elvis, the King, wrote none of his hits, so did he just swipe? Is traditional Japanese art, where artist reproduce the same paintings for generations , swiping? If we look hard enough, we artists, are all inspired and influenced by art we have seen or studied. So if we are to live by this common, over simplified, and narrow definition of swiping, we are all swiping to some degree. Especially those of us who draw other peoples intellectual property. But, I personally do not subscribe to that definition. Art, in any form, is not simply what you can see or hear, its concept and intellectual ideas. So, personally, I dont feel the intent of any of the pop art movement was wrong. In fact, ironically, it actually played a big role in Comics becoming more accepted as art to the general public. If we recall our comic book history, comics were considered garbage kids stuff. artists and writers even used pseudonyms as to not be disrespected by the real art community (at that time). One does not have to have a taste for all art forms, but we should all respect art in all its forms, even if we dont understand it. I feel bad for Russ Heaths situation in life, of course, BUT, he also created that art for DC Comics (I believe). So, it was DCs place to sue or collect any money, if there was a case. We can all trust that had DC Comics sued and collected royalties, Mr Heath would not have been paid a dime from DC, or whom ever he did the art for. Just like Lucasfilm would not pay me anything if someone illegally reproduced art I did for Lucasfilm. Furthermore, this comic suggests that it is Roy Liechtenstein who put Mr. Heath in this life situation. Trust me, I have had plenty of ideas used by other artists, some big name artists, who never give me credit. I dont blame those artists for any hardships in my life. Keep creating, and push those limits and boundaries, just like Roy Leichtenstein and countless other artists have.
