To be frank, Im severely disalusioned by the Islamic brotherhood and sisterhood that I expected to see from the ummah. And this is a reminder to myself first and foremost. Very few people apply the Hadith support your brother whether he is in the right or in the wrong... Rather we abandon each other on simple disagreements. Theres groupism where if your ideas are in tune you are in the group, and if you have a Slightly different view, then its goodbye. Goodbye to years of what was a presumed friendship based on loving for the sake of Allah. Something is very wrong. I wonder to myself that perhaps Im guilty of doing this to sisters, Im actually certain I have been guilty of it. I feel so ashamed and wonder if this lesson will protect me from repeating my past mistakes. I realised it is so important to remind oneself of ones own shortcomings in times we feel wronged. I also think its important to grow a thick skin. Mine is still growing. To let people enter and leave your life as they please and hold a huge appreciation for those who stick by you. Not because youre right and they should stick by you, but because you could have been wrong and they still didnt give up on you. Im sharing this because I dont believe my experiences are unique. We need to make dua for the fragile state of our ummah and while we are caught up with all the harshness of this world particularly with what is unfolding in Syria and Iraq, we need to remember the importance of mercy amongst ourselves. Sometimes I feel our constant need to be harsh towards kuffar in these times impacts on our ability to show mercy to one another. Allahu a3lam.
