To ditch potential grooms Part 15 The situation in the - TopicsExpress

To ditch potential grooms Part 15 The situation in the Suleman house was rather tense. We all sat rooted to our chairs and in complete silence for a while. I figured somebody needed to break the silent spell that was cast and decided to plead my case on my absent brothers behalf, however before I could open my mouth Aunt Zahra spoke up. Ahmed, you and Shahid have grown up together, you two were as thick as thieves throughout your lives. He stuck by you during your good times as well as when you were down on your luck, he covered your back and made excuses for you all your life, even in your brief marriage to Nabeela, he did what he could to save your marriage. Dont for one second think that he was the reason your marriage failed. You know what you did Ahmed. I took that as my cue and carried on where aunt Zahra left off, Ahmed, you cant possibly begrudge Shahid and Nabeela for falling in love, what happened was well after your marriage ended and you know that. He wouldnt possibly betray you like that. You are for all intents and purposes his brother. He is actually devastated by all of this and you know for a fact that he wont marry Nabz without your blessings. Please have a heart Ahmed. You found somebody else, will you not let Nabz do the same?. Ahmed remained silent as I looked into his face and saw that he was beginning to soften his steely resolve a little. Naz interrupted the silence come on bhai (brother), you have nothing to lose yet everything to gain. You never really loved bhabi (sister in law). You only got married because mom and dad forced you too! That last statement drew an audible gasp from aunt Zahra and uncle Hassen as they flushed feeling a sense of renewed guilt wash over them all over again. Uniting Shahid and Nabeela became important for all of us, however we all had different reasons for it. For aunt Zahra and uncle Hassen it was to assuage the guilt that they felt for making Ahmed marry Nabeela when they knew that he was not ready to be tied down. Naz was doing this not only because I asked her too but also because she felt that Nabeela deserved better. Me, what can I say? I did it out of love, love for my eldest brother as well as because I was tired of divorcees been ostracised by society! I wanted equal rights for men and women alike. I didnt see why a man was allowed to pick up the threads of his life and make a fresh beginning but a woman had to encounter so many hurdles before she achieved the same result. If I could make a difference in one divorcees life, I was content. We all sat lost in our own thoughts, each digesting what the other had to say when Ahmed finally sighed, bowed his heads into his hands and wept. I am sorry, I am so sorry he kept repeating in between sobs. To be continued...
