To help local middle school students develop an interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (#STEM) careers, Edward Chu, a second-year resident at Mass General, has worked with the Cambridge Health Alliance and the Yawkey Boys & Girls Club in Roxbury, MA, to launch an after-school Senior STEM Club. Members get to experience hands-on science in Mass General’s simulated hospital ward. “The whole premise behind what I’m doing here is to provide interactive learning, hands-on learning,” Dr. Chu said. “I think a lot of it is just empowering them to become excited about, not only medical conditions that may down the line affect them, but to let them realize what it’s like to potentially be in the health care field.”
