To mix different types of arts is a very famous thing nowadays. In 2011 I started to work out an idea first in the world based on the fusion of drumming and fire performance. By this I mean the art which performed by fire dancers and other fire artists who use flaming tools like poi, dragon staff, contact staff, fire swords etc... Since then there were a few live shows where Ive played some compositions like this but film was never made. In this video a drum solo can be seen included composed parts and improvisation. In some sections of this I use flaming drumsticks. Each sticks have two burning parts. The first is under the head of the stick (this way you can use it for its basic function: hitting the drums), the other flaming point is in the opposite side of the stick, below where you normally hold the stick. Here is the connection between fire performance art and drumming because this burning part is very close to the arm and the stick must to be in a continuous rotative motion only for avoiding the hand from any injuries. There are two types of tricks in the video. In the first the stick in the right or left hand fully turns around one or two times. In the second the moving of the stick is rotation with half-turns. After every trick-motion I hit the drums or cymbals (in case of the half-turn trick I hit the drums with the sticks head and then with the opposite end). This way the fire is not only a visual element, but it will appear as the part of drumming. There are stick tricks used by drummers without hitting the drums, only as show elements. I didnt want to simply burn the stick and play the same movements than when I play a groove. Other drummers have already done so with one burning point on the stick. We had only a few hours to record the film. I played the solo three times and we used the sound and video of the third take for mixing the audio and editing the film. We had not enough professional cameras and for this a few cam shots we made after the third take. This is live recording and we did no cutting and editing with the sound, only eq, a few sound effects and mixing! The solo starts with a 3/8 ostinato played on the bass drum pedal and hihat pedal meanwhile I play 5/8 improvisation with the hands. After this a few fire-stick tricks will come with the same 3/8 feet ostinato and other stick tricks with whole and half circular motion. The solo is ending with a double bass drum ostinato in 3/4 (or if you count otherwise: in 9/8) meanwile the hands are playing solo and fire-tricks in the same time signature. The flaming tools in this film - the sticks, the two fire holders and also the stands of the holders - were made by my own ideas and commercially not available. The background music under the main title and final text is from my new album called The Wondrous Stag which will be available soon. This Cd will be also the background music of the same titled mystical fire-theatric piece which well perform together with the brilliant Magma Firetheater.
