To my Catholic brothers and sisters who cling to the idea that the government has no business caring for the poor and disadvantaged with welfare, food assistance, healthcare but that these efforts should belong solely to religious institutions, I refer them to the Catechism of the Catholic Church, Part three, Article two, Participation in Social Life, 1, 1897-1904 regarding the rightful authority of governments; and particularly 1905-1908 stating that it is the proper function of governments to provide for the good of its citizens and finally 1911 spelling out Human interdependence and 1926 stating: The dignity of the human person requires the pursuit of the common good. Everyone should be concerned to create and support institutions that improve the conditions of human life. If you still think it is the sole purview of the faith community, you better get busy setting up some programs (that dont currently exist) now because people are going to start go hungry unless something is done to stop these wrongheaded Republican/Tea Party goals.
