To my LGBT friends: on this day of our Pride, let us consider helping those who are abused and bullied at the hands of some in our community. Please do not attend Gay Rodeos, and ask the same of everyone you know. And please let me know if you are interested in helping with protests leading up to the Bay Area (actually now in Duncan Mills in Sonoma County) rodeo in September. Some excerpts from the International Gay Rodeo Associations 2011 Annual Convention minutes, which detail some of the more egregious abuses known to and acknowledged by IGRA, and showing that injuries are not routinely reported by its members: Hot shots [electric prods used to force large animals to move in response to pain, illegal in California] were used in accordance with IGRA guidelines [sic] in the FL, AB, and OK rodeos. The stock contractors were reminded of our rules and corrected their handling of the stock. OGRA was using a new stock contractor. The stock contractors for FGRA and ARGRA were longtime, seasoned contractors and will most likely not be used again for this reason as well as several other issues. LGRA, Windy City Rodeo: A variance was requested and approved to use steers. The steers were too small for the size of some contestants, under performed, went down in the chutes and one didnt make it out of the chute. NMGRA, Zia Regional Rodeo – Lost horn sheath in Team Roping. The sheath was recovered and reattached by the vet on duty at the rodeo, given antibiotics. [Animal injury reports] were only filed for the Zia Regional Rodeo. The report needs to filled out whenever there is an injury reported.
