To my Senator - Judy Emmons who thought raising Michigans gas tax, - TopicsExpress

To my Senator - Judy Emmons who thought raising Michigans gas tax, to the highest in the nation by far, was the right course of action to fix our roads: Senator Emmons, I am shocked, saddened, and appalled to learn that you were one of those who recently voted to raise our gas tax by as much as 50¢! This is the sort of thing I would have expected from a Democrat, NOT from someone I trusted to represent my conservative belief in a smaller more-responsible government. This new tax you supported is going to be an absolutely oppressive and completely disproportionate burden on those of us already struggling to make ends meet. The wealthy will barely feel a thing and businesses will pass the new cost on to customers. Meanwhile those of us who spend many miles on the road just trying to keep the bills paid soon wont be able to. I continue to ask why new funding is required?! For many years, and not so many years ago, we had lower taxes and yet still managed to build new roads and bridges and maintain those we had. If funds that should have been allocated for building and maintaining our infrastructure have been reallocated, (misappropriated), then THAT is what needs to be fixed. But since its apparent that you and the others who voted for this insanity arent concerned with the devastating impact oppressive taxation is having on Michiganders, you should have at least stopped to consider the dynamic impact it will have on the sale of fuel in our state? Do you really think gas stations near Indiana, Ohio, Wisconsin, or even Illinois will be able to stay in business when just across the boarder the gas will be available for 50¢ less?! Im telling you were going to have a fuel bootlegging problem and the revenue you thought would be raised by this will not come to fruition. I dont know your heart - I dont know if you supported this out of a sincere belief that this was the best solution to the problem. But from my perspective, your position on this issue was indefensible and has done grave political damage to you and to the Republican party.
