To my english speaking friends: We are marking a 70th anniversary of liberating KL Auschwitz-Birkenau. Its one of the biggest examples showing how man can turn into beast on a mass scale. This should and will echo in the history as a landmark point, showing that we have to control ourselves, or we will lose our humanity. There is still a lot to do to educate and sensitize people, but in order to succeed we need to tell the truth and keep the real proportions in place. The death camps were founded by Germans at the territory of occupied Poland. Why? Because before WWII Poland was the most open society for Jewish community and there was a lot of Jews in Poland. So the main and clear reason for founding the camps in Auschwitz was - because it was close. As simple as that. Moreover, the first death camp was founded near the city of Gdańsk and Westerplatte (the place of first German strike) in Stutthoff on the September 2nd. The second day of war and they already started to build concentration camps. And the first prisoners of that camp was only Poles. This fact shows obviously that the German invasion and building of death camps were planned and pointed at both - Poles and Jews. That is why for me as a Pole and many others it is the most important thing to banish phrases like Polish death camps etc. as they are an abberration of the truth, hence they wont help in preventing such things happen in future.
