To my knowledge, Ive never written an online movie review. However, I have just seen a movie for the first time that has inspired me. This film, which has received 0% on Rotten Tomatoes, may be one of the best movies that you have never seen. My friends, welcome to the world of Johnny Be Good. Not only is this the premiere of Uma Thurman, also staring Anthony Michael Hall, but also features Paul Gleason (of Breakfast Club fame), Jennifer Tilly, as well as a 1988 Robert Downey Jr. portraying a brilliant young Tony Stark (Spoiler: He seems pretty “up”). It also contains some hilarious cameos by Jim McMahon and Howard Cosell playing themselves. There is a great moment for movie geeks early in the film where Johnny (Anthony Michael Hall) and Georgia (Uma Thurman) are watching Robert Downey Sr.s satirical inter-racial comedy Putney Swope at a drive-in movie theatre. Interwoven with its fun adolescence and decade nostalgia is a story about Johnny Football. Im sorry, they actually call him “Johnny Ballgame”. He is the highest rated high school quarterback in the county who is actively recruited by the top schools. I would venture that the story of greed and corruption in college athletics is as poignant today as it was in 1988, if not more so. Whether you are a fan of sports films, comedies, movies from the eighties, or interested in early works of some of your favorite actors, I will be the first to say that this is a movie worth watching.
