To our friends…for some of you that don’t know about our son Elijah’s battle with Cancer. This journey began at the end of Elijah’s junior year of high school; he started to complain about pain in his lower left leg, it seemed to just come then go. Till in late September, when it became unbearable. That was our first rushed trip to the ER. The x-ray they took showed a large mass on his left fibula, but unable to truly diagnose what he was seeing the doctor suggested we see an orthopedic doctor, so began the doctor visits and tests. Ultimately, resulting in Elijah’s first surgery on June 24th 2013, just days after his high school graduation, to biopsy and clean out the mass, which at the time was thought to be a benign, Giant Cell Tumor. Life as we knew it came to a sudden halt on July 3rd 2014, when we received a call from Elijah’s doctor, Dr. Richard Lackman, Director of the Orthopaedic Oncology Department of MD Anderson Cancer Center at Cooper Hospital in Camden, NJ diagnosing Elijah with high grade Osteosarcoma; A malignant bone tumor that usually develops in adolescents. We met with the Sarcoma team, which included Elijah’s Oncologist, Dr. Nati Lerman, who specializes in Sarcoma cancers. Within 2 weeks the 1st of 6 rounds of Chemotherapy began. Following the 3rd round, Elijah had another surgery to remove the section of bone with the tumor. After a few weeks to recover, he resumed the grueling back-to-back Chemo treatments again. Finally, Chemotherapy ended on January 17, 2014!!! It was an unbelievable 7 months; the illnesses, appointments and hospital stays became our daily routine. We learned to live in the moment more than we used to, we had to adjust quickly to recognize and enjoy the really good days, because there were so many bad days dealing with the after-effects of the chemotherapy. To any families who face this type of challenge our advice is to stay strong and believe! On April 26th from 10am-2am Elijah would like to invite everyone to come out and join us to raise money for The Relay for Life. Please click on the link below to donate or join us. Please this post with everyone. We have prepared a special video of Elijah and his journey below. Thanks in advance for everyone’s support.
