To paraphrase Sir Arthur Eddington, the right wing is not only stranger than we imagine; it is stranger than we CAN imagine. When I was a kid, I was continually told in school and in church (and the boundaries between those were thin indeed in those days) that hippies were all heroin users and they wanted to force me into their lifestyle. I had nightmares about being chased by them (although I was fascinated when I snuck through a hole in the fence by the beltway and saw a bus with a flat tire bearing a group called the Pharr Phamily, who failed to tie me down and inject me with the heroin). In church, we were always told how all pop culture reflected this liberal agenda. I recall the pastor ranting how Hey Jude was about heroin (minute you let her under your skin; movement you need is on your shoulder). The more things change, the more they stay the same ......
