To preface: Im not the victim, and hes not oppressing me in any way. Ok...I want to like Sam Harris. While Ive reached different conclusions, I appreciate a lot of the arguments the New Atheists have. I like Richard Dawkins and he seems to have tempered his approach in good ways. Sam Harris on the other hand, though brilliant, seems to be the most humorless, close-minded example. I can think of over 10 progressive theologians who address a lot of the major questions and obstacles he raises. I wrote him a note on his discussion board once in 2007, after reading and enjoying The End of Faith... I said I agree with many of his notions but was troubled by the fact that, if you take him at his word, perfectly smart people can be ignored simply if they believe in (or are at least OPEN) to god. He actually wrote back, told me that my ancestors would have cited their belief in Zeus for similar reasons, and informed me that liberal & moderate Christians are dangerous because they in some roundabout way protect extremists and fundamentalists. Then he gave me a link to Letter to a Christian Nation. Anyways, here an article where he writes off renowned physician-geneticist Francis Collins, working out of his usual boring, limited understanding of god. samharris.org/site/full_text/the-strange-case-of-francis-collins
