To start, anyone who wants to volunteer needs to know the rules of the buddy system, so here are those rules as dictated by an officer friend who described what needs to be done to keep safe: 1. Always stay with your buddy when not in a group setting, to deter potential attacks 2. Always let the group you are with know where you and your buddy are going so if anything happens we can find you 3. buddies should never shrug off their partner at any time. even if it is just to the restroom and back, dont make light of it and stay with the person you are buddied to. Conversations can wait, safety cant. 4. volunteers acting as buddies should carry hairspray, pepper spray, cooking oil(spraycan style), or lemon water in a bottle with them if they can. Also pocket knives are a good idea in case the person attacking has a weapon. We discourage guns or swords of any kind, as both can get you arrested, but a pocket knife is okay to carry. 5. Always make sure you know the layout of your location to better assist your buddy. If you dont know your way around and get lost with your buddy, try calling a friend already at the meetup/con/event to try and give you directions. Dont hang up until you are back where you are supposed to be. 6 . try to avoid conflict. If someone makes rude comments or tries to bait you into a fight, ignore it and walk away. Attackers will try to get you to make the first move so they can claim self defense later on. If you walk away and they lay their hands on you, it is assault and you are free to defend yourself. 7. If you see someone else being attacked, even if it isnt a cosplayer, act immediately. Call the police, then let the attackers know you called the police. 9 times out of 10 they will run away scared. The 1 in ten will usually think you are bluffing and try to attack you as well. Try not to fight back unless there is no other option. As I said, spray of the mentioned list above are better alternatives to getting hurt and will usually force the assailant into submission. These rules are in place for everyones safety so try to follow them and let me know if there are rules you would like added to the list or rules to be amended. I will do so as quickly as I can.
