To start your week, a wonderful story about The Bean Sisters - a living donor who gave one of her kidney beans to her dear friend. At 34, folk singer Maura Rogers needed a kidney transplant — and she needed one soon. Around this time, Maura recalls, that a band member raised the idea of adding an accordion player. Maura agreed, and they put an ad on Craigslist. Meredith Pangrace, then a 34-year-old graphic designer, came to try out. The band began to play. When Meredith joined in, her accordion keys elicited a deep, mournful sound, like a sob, that melded perfectly with Mauras voice. Meredith joined the band. Over pizza and chord sheets, Meredith and Maura grew to be close friends. Meredith learned about Mauras health struggles and search for a kidney donor. Maura was just this special, kind, generous person, with so much to give the world, Meredith says. Meredith wondered, What about me? Could I be the donor?
