To the Binibining Pilipinas Organizers: Watching the Filipina beauties ramp on stage is undoubtedly a showcase of how beautiful and glamorous Filipinas are. Although, from a psychological perspective and not being too conservative at the same time, calling these ladies on stage as Binibining No. makes me feel a little uncomfortable, I think the ladies are being dehumanized from being called by their numbers. The term Binibini is basically a salutation for a single lady which is tantamount to Miss. of the English language. In international pageants, they do not address candidates by saying Miss and followed by a number, precisely for the reason that they are being deprived of both individuality and respect. Rather they use Candidate or any other title used to connote a person in competition. Calling them by numbers, brings to mind a familar dark part of history, where individuals were deprived of names, some historians may remember the time of the nazis and of Adolf Hitler altogether. I hope we could find ways on how to address our Filipina women properly and that we give them esteem by providing them societal rights and calling them politically by their names.
