To the editor: Margate citizens are educated, critical thinkers - TopicsExpress

To the editor: Margate citizens are educated, critical thinkers who are smart enough to know the difference between a well researched, honest campaign and a spotty sales pitch. Sixty-five percent of Margate voters decided to vote “no” on the beach project, based on information compiled by the Margate Citizens Questioning the Beach Project (MCQBP) from the Army Corps, the DEP and the Margate Commission. To imply that Margate voters were somehow duped or bought by the MCQBP is not only a case of sour grapes, but an insult to the intellect of Margate citizens. Margate citizens are smarter than that. When provided with the facts, voters are able to make educated, informed decisions. The problem is that the Margate Commission does not work together as a team and personal agendas often get in the way, to the point where voters are left uninformed or presented with imprecise and vague information about important issues. Fortunately, there are a handful of citizens who undertake the arduous task of researching the facts and communicating them to the public. The proof is in the two most recent Margate referendums: spending $600,000 to construct a new code enforcement building and the beach project, both of which were successfully defeated. It is shameful though not surprising that those in opposition to the majority of voters in those two referendums chose to try and discredit the integrity of the group’s educational efforts. That requires minimal effort and is far easier than actually doing the research involved in providing voters with the real facts. It has not gone unnoticed by voters that those referendums, both of which would involve costly and unnecessary municipal spending, were supported by Margate Commissioner Taube and officers of the Margate Concerned Citizens Group. The facts are the facts and Margate voters cannot be bought. They vote based on the facts and what they believe to be in the best interest of their City, not based on how an elected official tells them to vote. Sharon Simon Margate
