To the people of Yirol in diaspora and their friends. This morning, Akech Manyiel uploaded on his facebook page the photos of equipment and signage of the project that he has been thinking of doing in the last few years. The project is to build a safe basketball courts in Yirol. Of course many of us who get to meet Akech regularly are aware of his project, however what some of us were not aware of is the fact that some basic few equipment and signage are already on their way to Yirol. This is a huge leap forward, Akech has done a remarkable job thus far in regard to making his project a reality. So what is in it for him? Why is he so committed to see basketball courts up and running in Yirol? The answer is simple, Akech is hugely talented sportsman who like many of us didn’t get opportunity because of war to take his skills to the highest level. Make no mistake, has he grew up in USA or Australia, he would be playing in NBA today like those of Lual Deng and many other elite professional basketball players in the world. But that did not happened as the war deprived us to do what each one of us love to do. Instead of forgetting basketball altogether since he couldn’t get the opportunity in his early age because of the war that we grew up in it, Akech decided to help young talents who are now well positioned to get opportunities that Akech never have. Here in Australia he help many young boys to go to USA to play basketball. So how can we the Yirol diaspora help him to build basketball courts in Yirol? Firstly, Akech is determine to build these courts for the talented young boys in Yirol, who without this project would never have a safe ground to play the sport they love to play. This is totally a goodwill project, the only return Akech will get out of this is appreciation, no profit or any other thing whatsoever. I know many of us are willing to help but sometimes it is good to set a target so that we can challenge ourselves. Let us challenge ourselves to help Akech finish this incredible charitable work. Here is what we can do: Akech has bought his ticket already and he will be in South Sudan soon, so while he is here, each one of us need to contact Akech on his mobile phone 0403-644-853 and give him $120 or more if your financial situation allow it. At the moment Australian dollar is really low against American dollar, therefore contributing AUD$120 will make USD$100. Just to make it imperative for us to pay that little amount which could go a long way to make this project a reality, we can agree that by the end of this December Akech would write a thank you Facebook status and list the names of all contributors excluding what each member contributed. To give it a benchmark, Akech will only write a thank you status with all names of contributors only if the number of people who contributed reach 30 or more. Note that this is not a competition, it is just a fun way to do it. Remember there are over 100 Yirol diaspora here in Australia. Imagine if each one of us do contribute $120 or more, we can build a castle (well, kind of).
