To think, we came this close to being ruled by these totalitarian optimists four decades ago. There were even rumors at the time of plans for a coup détat at Disneyland to establish a base for their conquest of the entire country. Perhaps it was the time they had plans to burn the books of American authors such as A.Bierce, M.Twain, E.A.Poe, H.Melville, and H.P.Lovecraft in an attempt to rid the country of the feared pessimistic strain that infected the nation from its origins; or that people finally became fed up with smiling till it hurt and were forced to turn to Botox and plastic surgery for relief. The vision couldnt last. Optimism is never sustainable. Over time their influence waned. With the slogan Today America, Tomorrow the World they did eventually teach part of the world to sing in perfect harmony. As many vestiges of past totalitarian ventures lived past their time or the destruction of their regimes if successful, the Up With People! movement survives today.
