Today, 15 years ago my plane landed in Washington, DC. I did not - TopicsExpress

Today, 15 years ago my plane landed in Washington, DC. I did not know what was ahead of me, all I wanted is to play basketball, the game I fell in love with so much. I knew I was recruited by Georgetown University but I had no idea what to expect, I spoke no English, knew nothing about USA culture, I left my home, my family, my team and was going to make it all on my own, I was 17 then. It was risky, at the time I was a successful b-ball player in Russia. I wish I could say it was a hell of a journey and have struggled my way to USA citizenship, my restaurant and all I have now. But no, I have had way too many wonderful people who did not only made me feel home, but made me fall in love with this country, my dearest mom- Laura J. Waters and the whole Waters family who made me truly feel home in their Maryland home, always supportive, always on my side, always understanding even if I spoke Russian, and there was always a nice room in their home ready for me, with chocolates on the bed. You carried me after my ACL surgery, you told me I was beautiful after a horrible nose surgery and a dislocated shoulder...My sisters- Zsuzsanna Horváth and Santia Jackson- you are my angels, remember? :) I made the whole GU cry while giving speech about our friendship, you two made my college years absolutely incredible, best in my life ! Hey, I am even going to thank coach Patrick J. Knapp Jr., who ruined my b-ball career :) (sorry, but I must say something sarcastic here) you brought me to USA and I know you always loved me, I just know it ! Sorry for the longest, the most boring (I hate those) status, I just wanted to say that 15 years went by so quickly, so happy, and I am exactly where I want to be, all because of the people I met during my first, truly, baby steps, my dear George Lutz , Narumol Anderson,(I followed you to Austin, after all:) father Raymond B. Kemp (you saved me from being kicked out, remember?!), all the Georgetown Professors, coaches, my teammates, staff...Do I truly feel like an American now, 15 years later? No, I am an American with a Russian, Armenian, Ukrainian, Lithuanian, Polish soul and no one can take that away from me ;)
