Today 17 people zoomed out to Mud Islands to finish weeding the tern colony. Also, 2-3 big bags of rubbish were collected, including balloons attached to plastic string, tangled in the salt bush. It was mostly plastic bottles, plastic bags and polystyrene foam in various forms. Plus 1 cigarette butt. The seagulls were nesting, with 2-3 eggs in each ground scrape nest. A few early chicks hatched today. Sacred and straw-necked ibis were nesting also, with many nests on the northern side of the island with 2 white eggs in each nest atop the salt bush. The sacred ibis were definitely in the minority, but seemingly roosting within the straw-necked ibis colony happily. Pelicans were gathering and a few large white eggs sighted. Bernice counted 305 small wader birds on the lagoon - they happily sat while she counted them!
