Today 20 December 1192: King Richard I the Lion-Hearted is captured near Vienna enroute back from the Third Crusade. His captor Leopold V of Austria had various reasons for the capture and ransom. He would be passed off to Holy Roman Emperor Henry VI in March 1193 who would demand 150,000 merks (65,000 pounds silver). Richard would eventually be released in 1194 after vast taxes were instituted to raise the ransom.
