Today 228th Street in New York City was renamed Ted Corbitt Way in the Marble Hill neighborhood where the ultramathoner and Olympian Corbitt lived for much of his life. Dignitaries such as Congressman Charles Rangel, State Senator Adriano Espaillat and Former Councilman Robert Jackson were on hand to honor Corbitt. “What a wonderful role model for our youths,” claimed Rangel. More kids will learn about the remarkable life and achievements of Ted Corbitt because of this honor,” added Jackson, who has run the New York City Marathon for Team for Kids. In 1993, the year before he died, Fred Lebow called Corbitt, NYRR’s first president, “the father of American distance running.” NYRR’s CEO George Hirsch, at the ceremonies along with former NYC Marathon winners Nina Kuscsik (1972) and Gary Muhrcke (1970) referred to Corbitt as “a legend.” As the crowd of 100 applauded when the street signage was official, a very emotional Gary Corbitt, Ted’s son, called it a great day in Marble Hill and the entire running community. His childhood bedroom, on the top floor of one of the Marble Hill apartment buildings, looks over the new street sign.
