Today, 27 Years Ago, In South-East Angola... On Wednesday, 28 October 1987: 66 Brigade now had only one battalion at the Chambinga bridge, two having been deployed for offensive operations. One had been sent to the east bank of the Cuito to carry out area operation there, and had now been pulled back to the Cuito-Chambinga confluence. Another was now ordered to join the Operational Command Post at Viposto once it had replenished. Faple was thus relying largely on 16 Brigade to cover the approaches to the Chambinga bridge, allowing elements of 66 Brigade to move into the southern area to operate against the South Africans in general, and the guns in particular....
