Today Beyond Borders: Exploring Syncretic Cultural Traditions in Kachchh (Gujarat, India) 16 June 2014, 18:00 to 20:30 (at the University of the Arts London, Elephant and Castle) ‘So Heddan So Hoddan’ (‘Like Here, Like There’, 2011), winner of the Basil Wright Film Prize at the RAI Film Festival in 2013 and ‘Do Din ka Mela’ (‘A Two Day Fair’, 2009), commendation of RAI Intangible Culture Film Prize in 2011, engaging, sensory and contemplative films about Sufi musical traditions. The works are collaborative projects with the artists, attempting to redefine the stereotyped notions that exist about poor, rural, non-literate communities. A presiding thematic of their work has been a problematising of notions of self and the other, or normality and deviance, of the local and the global, through the exploration of diverse narratives and rituals. With Dr. Anjali Monteiro and Dr. K.P. Jayasankar, Professors at the School of Media and Cultural Studies, Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai, are award-winning documentary filmmakers. Presented by MADAN (Media-Art-Design-Anthropology-Network@UAL), chaired by Cathy Greenhalgh, in association with the Documentary Research Hub at LCC.
