Today, DECEMBER 11th, in 1964, soul singer/songwriter SAM COOKE was shot dead at the Hacienda Motel in Los Angeles, California. Bertha Franklin, manager of the motel, told police that she shot and killed SAM COOKE in self-defense because he had attacked her. Police found SAM COOKEs body in Franklins apartment-office, clad only in a sports jacket and shoes, but no shirt, pants or underwear. The shooting was ultimately ruled a justifiable homicide although recent accounts have cast doubt on that conclusion! His many hits included YOU SEND ME, ONLY SIXTEEN, CHAIN GANG, CUPID, TWISTING THE NIGHT AWAY, WONDERFUL WORLD, HAVING A PARTY,BRING IT ON HOME TO ME, EVERYBODY LOVES TO CHA CHA CHA, ANOTHER SATURDAY NIGHT, and A CHANGE IS GONNA COME.
