Today I am going to tell you a bit more about the Job Creation - TopicsExpress

Today I am going to tell you a bit more about the Job Creation Program that was brought forward in late June early July and council gave it the go ahead to apply for this Grant that has resulted in hiring three local residents. This is funded by government and Community Futures Wendy McCullough, along with Sandy Elzinga and city staff worked through the details and supplied immense help to make this a reality. Most of the work and supplies you see is being covered by the JCP. In a nutshell this program is offered to local residents who are currently unemployed and on EI so this will enhance their skill for the workforce and provide them with more job opportunities. The program finishes up December 5th. Here are the details on the scope of the work being done. Build 20 picnic tables to be used for various events and city placement. They have also done a lot of work on O’Hairi Park, cutting grass, cleaning up the site and now they have the poles in place to finish installing a fence between the park and the adjacent property. This will be a chain link fence with the green slats inserted in the bars that will provide a cover and spruce up the view. I feel we as a city need to ensure this park is kept as part of our city’s regular maintenance. At the old COP site as many of you have noticed has been given a considerable facelift. The finished product, standing on the street looking in will look like an old assay office building from the early 1900’s. All the new wood will have the aged look and the site will have a couple of windows and a veranda just like the old buildings of days past when mining was king here in Greenwood and surrounding area. On the left side close to the museum there will be a replica mine shaft at the back of the property with an old mine cart on rails leading into the shaft. There will also be al old style pump where visitors can stop and pump up a serving of “Greenwood Goldwater” along with several picnic tables. All of this is being done as part of your councils plan and what was a commitment in the previous election dedicated to stop more traffic in the city of Greenwood. This along with the newly installed “Free Wi-Fi” that was just completed and the clean-up of many of local properties will enhance the overall aesthetics of COG. Stopping more traffic and giving them something to do while they are here will support our local business owners even in the off season.
