Today I am grateful for Breakfast Happiness. Breakfast Happiness is the expression of joy my cat has at the very thought of eating after a long eight hours of deprivation. As soon as he hears me stirring, he comes to express his Breakfast Happiness to me. He first makes this sound that is a combination of an inquiring meow and a chirp and if I get up promptly and move toward canned things in his Food Basket, he makes a sound that I can only describe as saying, “yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah,” with your lips closed. If he gets concerned about breakfast, he will make a sound like a little groan of discontent and impatience not unlike what I do at the Trinity Lane interstate exchange. Breakfast Happiness is a lot like Treat Happiness but Breakfast Happiness is enhanced by hunger and Treat Happiness is not. Treat Happiness is the expression of delight on a full stomach, like Dessert Happiness or Mid-afternoon Vending Machine Happiness. But Breakfast Happiness is colored with the fear that food might never happen again. You are reliant on a large sleeping person with opposable thumbs to open things and if they don’t, you might keel over on the window seat watching acrobatic squirrels tightrope walking across the sill, turning to admire their reflections in the glass while you suffer, wan and pale and fainting from hunger inside. I have Donut Happiness but I try to not express it in line at the Dunkin Donuts. I mean I think probably everyone there is having Donut Happiness but you just can’t be that enthusiastic in public. I think Breakfast Happiness makes me happy because it is this genuine, visceral expression of gratitude. A blessing before a meal that is completely heartfelt every single morning. Can you imagine being that grateful to eat the same thing every day of your life? But he is. Whenever my cat has Breakfast Happiness, it makes ME happy to see that much pleasure over just being able to eat. And it reminds me that I can be that happy if I choose to be. “Aigs, honey? There you go, honey.” … “Thank you, honey.”
