Today, I am so very grateful for and so incredibly proud of my sons. Josh has graduated from Florida State, Phi Beta Kappa with honors. Yesterday, Chase realized a year-long dream and through great effort, was accepted into Chapman University for film studies just south of Los Angeles. As you may know, Chase, after his mother died, processed her death by getting heavily involved in school. He was Senior Class President, member of the the soccer team, was elected the first ever Homecoming King in the entire history of The Bolles School, was on the Honor Court, on the Student Council, totally immersed in the entire school process. And it served him well. And he loved it. But when he began college in August at the University of South Carolina (he did not get accepted into his school of choice, the University of Southern California), he already knew that he really wanted to be a screenwriter. He wrote a book about his mothers death At age 14, five years ago, to help other kids dealing with parental suicide and addiction, and that experience helped him to know that he wanted to be a screenwriter. So instead of getting immersed in the school experience in his first year at South Carolina as he so wanted and intended to do, he dedicated the entire year instead to his studies, so that he could transfer to a Southern California school known for film studies. Accordingly, he did not join a fraternity, he did not get involved in school politics and student government as he wanted to do, he did not get involved in school clubs, he did not do any of the things that he really loved and intended to do. Instead, he simply focused on his studies. It paid off. Last week he made 4.0 honor roll, he made the Presidents Honor List at the University of South Carolina, and yesterday was accepted to Chapman University for film study as a sophomore. Josh has been teaching for several months in Buenos Aires, and is expected to come home in about July. He will be going to graduate school on full scholarship. I have made so many terrible mistakes and horrible life decisions that have profoundly and directly affected these boys, however, they persevere, keep their priorities straight, thrive, and learn from my personal mistakes, of which there are, sadly, many. I take no credit for their successes and their incredible character and integrity. I know too many shitty parents with wonderful kids and I know to many wonderful kids with shitty parents to believe theres necessarily a correlation. I just know that my two boys are spectacular, and I am truly the proudest father in the world. My boys are my heroes. I hope I can grow up and be like them some day. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
