Today I boarded a jet at 6:30 AM and I landed safely at Noon. There was a bit of chatter during the boarding process but after take-off there was complete silence. For over three hours not a word was spoken. My fellow passengers and I looked out the windows but it was evident we were looking beyond the clouds and reflecting on all that was lost that day 13 years ago. Passengers hung their heads a bit lower today yet it was a very comfortable silence, a contemplating silence, an unpretentious silence of remembrance and humility. 150 people flying at 37,000 feet in complete silence. Today I learned silence can in fact be the only sound and sometimes silence can speak volumes.
