Today I called on an extraordinary person. She is the mother of my friend and Mar Thoma priest, the Rev P.J. Varghese, and mother-in-law of another friend Shanthi Mathai. She lost her husband when her only son was just five-month old. It was a tough task to bring him up as a model of rectitude and good conduct. She lives in an eco-friendly house where the temperature is five degree centigrade less than outside the house. The house is without a ceiling fan and remains cool round the year. The Rev Varghese and Shanthi Kochamma are lovers of nature and have made good use of abandoned tree roots and discarded bottles to make the house extraordinary like Mrs Marykutty or Ammachi, as I would like to call her.
