Today I celebrate my friend Paulo for letting me use his Visa card to make an urgent electronic payment. Demanding that a local pays for important transactions ONLY using either a Master or Visa card is brutal punishment! Yeah! Go ahead and laugh at me because I do not own a single credit card. I dont! You may be despising me because your local ATM cards all have the words VISA Electron printed on them. Well... those cards of yours are not able to make any electronic payments. So: pooooh on you as well. Anyway, there is nothing as frustrating as trying to find a friend who has a valid Visa or Master card within a few hours in Kampala. I called all my posh family and friends, but none owns one. I called my business and trading friends to no avail. I asked colleagues at the university and only found one whose card was expired. So in desperation I called Paulo my banker friend of many years. Within a flash, I was ushered into the Executive Wing of his bank, asked to deposit the equivalent cost and a fat tip into his personal account, and then given the details of his card. In another flash, my electronic payment was made and I received my receipt slip. In usual fashion, I folded two red notes of local currency into the folds of my palm, reached out towards Paulo who chuckled handsomely as he received his goodie. Business deal done!
