Today I feel exceptionally pessimistic, due mainly to a convergence of recent news: the IPCCs latest report, which contains dire warnings about the fate of life on Earth, and the midterm election results, which indicate just how deeply the American populace is sleeping. If we want a habitable planet, we need to be moving very quickly in the direction of sustainable energy, lower collective consumption rates, localized economies, greater corporate regulation, redistribution of wealth, etc., but it seems that everything is sliding or being slid very quickly in *exactly* the opposite direction. I agree with Russell Brand and others who say that the only way forward is revolution, meaning the exercise of true democracy outside the grip of the global Death Machine. This seems to be our only hope, yet it seems like a vaporous pipe dream when one considers the enormity of the challenges we face and the deep entrenchment of the powers-that-shouldnt-be, not to mention our own individual addictions, distractions, and needs to navigate within the existing system. Normally I agree with Brand that the revolution is inevitable, but unfortunately today is not one of those days.
