Today I found following post in my Facebook page. I think it is very interesting and easy to read for English learners. **************** why is it bad to study grammar rules? May be you have studied English many years already. Why can’t you speak English easily, quickly and automatically right now. May be you know a lot grammar rules than Americans, Canadians…why? Because native speakers don’t study grammar rules too much, not until high schools, college schools, they study grammar for writing, but for speaking they don’t. Unfortunately, the answer for most people is that you focused a lot on grammar rules too much? Why? Because your teacher told you to. So, why is it bad to study grammar rules? If you want to speak English easily, quickly and automatically, just like a native speaker, just like a child. If you focus on grammar rule, it’ll hurt your speaking ability. Well how do native speakers learn English grammar. The answer is that they learn English grammar through listening, the best way when you learn English input. In another word, they’re hearing correct grammar. I give you an example, when you learned the past tense, your teachers had a lot of pressure to go fast, fast and fast. They’re always pushing the student to go fast. They’re trying to finish the textbooks. Eventually, you know a lot grammar rules and you forget it, you never learn deeply like a native speaker. May be, you know a basic idea but you can’t use it quickly, easily. That’s why you’re still making mistakes with the past tense now. Native speakers learned the past tense, I don’t know ten of thousand times, million times, they’ve still learning the past tense as long as they live that’s how they can use the past tense quickly, easily and may be you can’t. The easy way, the best way to learn English, you need to repeat everything you learn many times. May be you have an article or something you’re listening to and you like it, listen five times is not enough, thirty times is not enough. Especially, when you see a new word or a new sentence, you always write down the whole phrase, not just one word by one word. Word by word is slow and it doesn’t help. So, a phrase is a group of word or may be you have a sentence, it’s even a part of a sentence. For example, you have the word “hate” and you want to learn it. In English school, your teacher always told you to remember a long, huge vocabulary lists. That’s the old way, the kind of textbooks way, don’t do it. It’s very powerful when you learn the whole phrase instead of individual single words. Now, you get a notebook and you always write down the whole phrase, not just individual word. Well, phrases give you a lot pieces of information. Number 1: phrases are easier to remember because you have a picture, you have a meaning, you’re not learning that one way, you learn how to use that word correctly. You don’t think about English, you’ll learn English faster without stopping, without dictionary, without translating. How’s little tricky. Number 2: there’s a bonus. When you learn English phrases, you’re learning grammar also. You’re only learn one way, you learn how to use that word correctly. That’s another way native speakers learn English grammar. When they’re children, they always learned it from phrases, not just one word by one word. So, you have the word “hate” and you wanna learn it, just write down “James hates ice cream” and study it, review it. whenever you say: “she hates ice cream, he hates ice cream” you’ll add the “s” on the end. If you only learned it “hate” means does not like and you memorize it, that’s why you still make mistakes. It’s very easier when you learn that word with the other words. You’ll get a great benefit, a great stuff happens when you learn phrases. So, phrases, phrases. The important thing, you should listen a lot. Listening is the key to speaking excellent English. Listening is the magic key to great English speaking. There’s a lot of research show that listening is the important thing you can do it if you want to speak English easily, quickly and automatically. Now, how a little specific about listening: “how to listen and what you listen to?”. I recommend you should listen easy English. In another way, you can get English materials are easy. I mean you listen and understand 95 percent or more without stopping, without dictionary, without translating. Especially, you should listen materials are interesting to you. I guarantee when you listen English materials are easy and interesting to you than textbooks. You might try be children’s programmes, you might try children’s audios, just find materials are for native speakers, like Americans who are 13, 14, 15 years old. If it’s too easy, find something that’s too difficult. When you’re advanced, you can watch America movies, Australia movies that when you’re advanced. Listen, listen a lot, that’s the secret, that’s how you learn English easily, quickly. On the other hand, you learn English in schools, most of time you learn with your eyes not with your ears. That’s why you have some trouble with your speaking ability, you have studied English many years and you can’t speak English quickly, you have lot of problem, you feel shy, nervous while you’re speaking. Someone asked you questions, you must answer constantly, constantly answering. Listening is the most important thing. Every chance you have, get an ipod, get a mp3 player. Listen in the morning when you get up, when you’re sitting on the bus, when you’re home. That’s how you to develop your speaking, listening as well. It may odd to hear that I’m playing English instead studying English, I really hate the words: “study English”. It’s stressful me so much. Many student leaned English in schools and they focus on textbooks too much. I don’t want to say my teachers that’s sound horrible. My teachers are very kind, generous and friendly, they really cared about their students genuinely, sincerely but this is the way they were trained and they were traditional. They also have a pressure from their bosses that’s why they know textbooks are terrible things to use but they still use it. Of course, many students all around the world studied English from textbooks, that’s why they can’t speak English automatically. If you want to learn English easily like native speakers, just try something different. Practices make perfect, try something different. I just don’t know how my teachers could possible be saying the one word for such a long time, I have no ideas about that. As far as I am concerned that English is very important because it helps us to communicate with other people from different country all around the world. May be, you want to learn English so that you get a better job, or it’s a simple thing you’re really into English, but you don’t know how to learn English because English classes always like this, many teachers try to finish the textbooks. They think English classes are the best way to learn. You keep doing this way, you keep doing what you learned in schools, you try to memorize and translate vocabulary, it’ll hurt your speaking ability. English schools teach you learn formal English. For example: when you see your friends, native speakers always say: “how’s it going?” instead of saying: “how are you?”. Unfortunately, your teachers always teach like this. Second thing, you should learn with your ears not with your eyes. The most important thing, you do not study grammar rules. Eventually, you should learn deeply, deep learning. So, I hope I’m compelling. Thank you for reading. If you like it, please comment. Thank you for thoughts on this. by @Tomoji Nakata
