Today I got to be the Fairy Bread Mother. Bricco Panetteria is an incredible Italian bakery in the North End, wafting heavenly smells from down an alley and producing inexpensive loaves of perfect bread. It is apparently also the sister operation of Il Panino, a divine restaurant that I frequent with my dear friend Matteo. This afternoon, I loaded up on a few foccaccias and parmigiana baguettes, then proceeded to distribute them to folks in my neighborhood: my landlady, the young man who helps me with household projects, the Greek cafe owners across the street (who are constantly giving me free food, "extras" and to-order custom dishes). My surprise? Each of them tried to insist on giving me money, food or booze in exchange, all of which I handily refused. Everyone ended up happy...
