Today, I join thousands of my colleagues in ignoring our instincts as educators and succumbing to the pressures of bureaucrats and profiteers. We will set aside teaching our students for 3 days to administer tests we did not have a part in designing and are not allowed to read. (Yep, the instructions not only forbid us from copying the tests, were not supposed to READ them!) The results of these tests will be used to evaluate us as teachers, whether we teach ELA or not. They will be used to further vilify our noble profession and further chip away at public education. They will generate profits for testing companies and drain scarce resources from school districts. Our kids will be stressed out, and we will paste on smiles and try to help them get through. I wonder what Mr. Cuomo, Mr. King and their financiers would do if none of us showed up?
